The 3 Stages of Burnout

Raise your hand if you’ve experienced burnout before 🙋🏻‍♀️ That feeling beyond exhaustion where you can’t concentrate, feel like you’re constantly making mistakes, re-upping bad habits, headaches, lightheadedness and extreme fatigue. Especially during this time, the risk of exhaustion is high.

So, how does burnout manifest? Well we first start out normal and in good health, then we experience the 3 stages of stress response.

Stages of Burnout:

🚨 THE ALARM STAGE: the body goes into panic mode and the brain triggers the adrenals to secrete cortisol and adrenaline.

✋🏼 THE ADAPTIVE OR RESISTANCE STAGE: the body attempts to return to homeostasis. But when triggered too often, the body remains in high alert and builds resistance and tolerance to coexist with these stressors.

😰 THE EXHAUSTION STAGE: the body continues to function outside of homeostasis, emergency responses are depleted and the body begins to shut down - aka BURNOUT

The latter is where a lot of people are at right now. Exhaustion. Emptiness. Feeling depleted. You know that you need to rest and restore, however you instead want to push a little bit more and a little bit more.

The saying goes, you cannot fill from an empty cup.

Because the more you push and force past exhaustion, the more hurt you’re creating for your body. This can lead to a weakened immune and nervous system, which can lead to chronic stress and illness - to name the bare minimum. We have to pause, observe and provide for ourselves when our bodies are tired. And having a healthy and thriving bodily system is crucial - especially now and especially ALWAYS.

My chosen restorative practices include meditation, breathing exercises, grounding, being in nature, yoga, painting, journaling, reading and being in water.
